Coronary Heart Disease Information for Women

Heart disease is often thought of as a man’s disease, but it isn’t so.

Heart Disease is the Number 1 Killer of Women

Nearly 400,000 women die of cardiovascular diseases annually, including diseases of the heart, blood vessels, and stroke.

And more women than men have died of heart diseases since 1984.

Several factors may contribute to heart disease in women:

  • Women  may  ignore  symptoms of  heart  disease,  thinking they are not at risk
  • A major study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that women were not as likely as men to be referred for procedures to unclog arteries
  • On average it takes women 15-20 minutes longer to get to the emergency room than men. This delay puts their lives at risk if they are having a heart attack.

Women also respond differently than men to certain coronary heart disease tests and procedures. Talk  to your  doctor and let him or her help you find the best course of action for your heart’s health.
