Prepare for your CYPHER® Stent procedure

If your doctor recommends a coronary stent implantation, there are a few things that you can do to get ready. Learn as much as you can about stents, and be sure to ask your doctor about any questions you may have. This can help you feel more comfortable.

For several days before the procedure, you may be asked to take aspirin and other prescribed medications. So, be sure to let your doctor know:

  • If you cannot take aspirin
  • If you are currently taking sirolimus (brand name Rapamune)
  • If you are taking any other medications
  • If you have any drug allergies
  • If you have a history of bleeding problems
  • If you have any metal allergies (e.g.; 316L stainless steel)
  • If you are currently pregnant or nursing
  • If you have plans for any additional medical or dental procedures

You should be able to return to your normal activities soon after your procedure but this will be determined by your doctor. Check with your doctor before doing anything that is physically strenuous.

The CYPHER® Stent is not for everyone — especially those who cannot take antiplatelet medicine, or have certain allergies. It carries risks, including the formation of a blood clot in the stent, heart attack, and the possible need for a repeat procedure. The CYPHER® Stent also carries the risks associated with the drug sirolimus. Talk to your doctor about these risks, and whether this or other treatments are right for you.
